    Autonomy in Language Learning: The Importance of Individual Responsibility and Independence

    Autonomy in language learning means that the individual takes an active role in his/her own learning process, sets goals, chooses methods and takes responsibility for the process. In this approach, the language learner is not limited to what the teacher or the textbook offers; he/she manages his/her own learning journey and thus learns the language in a more effective and permanent way. In this article, we will discuss the importance of autonomy in language learning, its benefits, and the steps individuals can take to become autonomous language learners.

     

    What is Autonomy in Language Learning?
    Autonomy in language learning means that the individual has the capacity to be independent in the learning process. This independence can also be defined as the individual's ability to gain self-management skills in the language learning process and to provide self-motivation in the language learning process. Autonomous individuals are those who are aware of their learning needs, set goals in accordance with these needs, choose learning strategies themselves and actively monitor and evaluate the process.
